Sarpatta Parambarai is a 2021 Sports, Periodic Film by Pa. Ranjith, starring Arya in the lead role. During the 1970s in North Madras, The movie portrays the rivalry and competition between two boxing communities – Sarpatta Parambarai and Idiyappa Parambarai. Boxing was a prestigious competition in the village. Winning the boxing competition is even considered as a factor to determine the superiority of the villages. When Sarpatta Parambarai loses all the old victorious glory by continuously losing the matches to Idiyappa Parambarai, they believe in Kabilan’s (Arya) skills to save their village prestige for the one last time. The rest of the movie is about the boxing matches and how Kabilan transforms himself from tricky situations to be a perfect boxer as his ambition.

Sarpatta Parambarai is not your regular Tamil hero movie. Each cast of Sarpatta Parambarai had enough screen space for their roles. We will remember every character in the film even after we complete the film. The characters like Dancing Rose, Vembuli, Ranga Vaathiyar were much powerful as Kabilan. As we know, the movies of Pa. Ranjith are very close to reality, and there is no space for over heroism and unwanted glorifying of a character. Sarpatta Parambarai shows how a person slips away from achieving his goal at the last moment. The movie well portrayed the approach towards success that leads to ego, revenge, and overconfidence. Unlike the other films of Pa. Ranjith, Sarpatta Parambarai doesn’t have any socio-political or community discrimination elements, which makes the movie truthful to its genre.

Arya played the lead role as Kabilan. He handled the character perfectly. Since that character required a lot of physic and flexibility, Arya was a perfect fit for Kabilan. He was preparing for this character for a long time with heavy workouts and boxing training. Arya’s performance after the intermission where Kabilan deviates from his goal and his transformation scenes towards the end were fabulous. After Kabilan, the most discussed character in town is Dancing Rose, played by Shabeer Kallarakkal. The boxing scenes of Kabilan and Rose was one of the best scenes from Sarpatta Parambarai. Pasupathy did his part nicely as Ranga Vaathiyar. All the other casts like John Kokken, Kalaiyarasan, Santhosh Prathap, Dushara and others did a good job. Sarpatta Parambarai was perfect in terms of casting. Santhosh Narayanan‘s songs and BGM were stunning. It took the movie to another level. The cinematography of the film was marvellous. All the visuals were beautiful. The art department and special effects department of Sarpatta Parambarai deserves appreciation. Being a movie happening in the 1970s, it was a big job to recreate that environment. The team flawlessly made the houses, shops, vehicles during the 90s.

When Pa. Ranjith‘s dream project comes to reality, that soul is conveyed perfectly to the viewers. The movie is written well and taken excellently. Even though a less duration would have been better, we don’t feel any lag. The movie is fast-paced, with the scenes are very engaging. The movie is well balanced as a sports film and as well as a periodic drama. Pa. Ranjith’s best work. A fan of his boldness, vision and social empowering aim. Pa. Ranjith is one of the very few directors in Tamil Cinema who give more importance to content and building characters than heroes. Even with an icon like Superstar Rajinikanth, we only saw Kabali and Kaala instead of the regular Rajini.

Sarpatta Parambarai is a not to miss spots entertainer. The movie would have done wonders if released in theatres.
